Choosing the right repair shop

The best way to avoid auto repair rip offs is to be prepared. You should have an idea of your vehicle works and how to identify common problems. No matter what you drive, when you take your vehicle in for repairs or service, you want the job done right. Don’t just carry your vehicle to the nearest establishment and hope for the best.

Follow these steps to choose the right repair shop and also avoid scams:
  • Read your owner’s manual to become more familiar with your vehicle and follow the manufacturers suggested service schedule.
  • Start shopping for a repair facility before you actually need one.
  • Ask your friends and associates for your recommendation.
  • Once you choose a repair shop, start off with a minor job. If you are pleased, you can trust them with more complicated repairs later.
  • Look for a neat, well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays.
  • Professionally run establishments will have courteous, helpful staff.
  • Feel free to ask for the names of a few customers and call them so that you can obtain some information about the establishment.
  • All policies should be posted or explained to your satisfaction.
  • Ask the staff if they have experience working on your type of vehicle.
  • Ask if the shop usually does your type of repair, especially if you need major work.
  • Look for evidence of qualified technicians, such as trade school diplomas etc.
  • If you need to have expensive repairs to be done, or if you have questions about recommended work, definitely get a second opinion if there is any chance of you saving any money. Make sure to ask for a written estimate.
